Your Custom instructions are quietly saved into your personal AGENTS.md — the rules that apply to all your work. So you get the power of AGENTS.md (below) through a simple settings box, no files to create.
Je Custom instructions worden stilletjes opgeslagen in je persoonlijke AGENTS.md — de regels die voor al je werk gelden. Zo krijg je de kracht van AGENTS.md (hieronder) via een simpel instellingenvak, zonder bestanden te maken.
Codex has a lot of settings. As a non-coder you only need to recognize three — and you can leave the rest exactly as they are.

Everything else — editors, terminals, advanced agent options — is built for developers. If a setting doesn't appear in this table or in Personalization, you can safely ignore it.

Your personal style (above) travels with you everywhere. Sometimes you want rules that apply to one specific project only — that's what AGENTS.md is.
It's a plain text file you place in a project folder. Codex reads it before doing any work there, so the rules are always applied. Good for project-specific things: "this is the reports folder — always keep the original file and save finals as PDF." You don't need to hand-create it; just ask Codex: "Create an AGENTS.md in this folder with these rules…" and paste your list.

The more specific one wins if they ever disagree. For most non-coders, your personal style covers 90% — reach for a project AGENTS.md only when a folder needs its own rules.

Start in Settings → Personalization: set Personality to Friendly and write plain-language Custom instructions — that's your personal style, applied everywhere. Touch only Theme, Model and Permissions; ignore the rest. Use a project AGENTS.md when one folder needs its own rules.
